The Museum's Extensive Collection

The Museum was established in 1943, originally to house artefacts from the medieval Cathedral, and these are on permanent display. In the decades since then, the trustees have continued to add to the Collection, which is now extensive, varied and relates to all aspects of life in Dunblane and its environs.

We have many photographs and paintings which show views of the Cathedral and town from the Victorian era to today. We have a large collection of books, ancient and modern, covering Dunblane, Scottish and Church history, together with documents from the 17th century to modern times.

Among our artefacts covering the long history of Dunblane are pre-historic items including bronze axe heads and a unique disc-bead necklace made of cannel coal and jet which is over 4,000 years old; it was found at Barbush on the edge of Dunblane during excavations for a housing development. We have an impressive and extensive display of communion tokens from all over the world. We continue to acquire items ranging from treasure trove to modern heritage, and among our latest acquisitions are artefacts relating to Andy and Jamie Murray, tennis champions.

Visitors can also enjoy a short film describing the history of Dunblane.
