A Quick Tour

Originally called the Dunblane Cathedral Museum when it opened in 1943, many of the exhibits are concerned with the ecclesiastical history of the area.

The collection of Communion Tokens is of national importance and has recently been restored with the help of the Scottish Museums Council conservators.  The oldest is early 17th century, and a large proportion is from overseas; there are almost 7,000 in all.  They are mostly housed in corrosion-free boxes but there is always a selection on display.

There is an extensive collection of original paintings in various media and these together with the photographic records illustrate the changing face of Dunblane and its people through the ages.

One of the oldest and most valued items is the 4,000-year-old cannel coal necklace, discovered in a local quarry, with reconstructed pottery pieces of a similar age.

Other treasures to look out for are some of the original carvings from the Cathedral, Communion silver, spinning wheels, Victorian spectacles, and an 18th-century newspaper boy's delivery bag.

Our museum shop has an interesting range of locally crafted products, children's novelties, and Dunblane souvenirs.

The recently created garden demonstrates gardens throughout the ages and retains some original features including a 17th century well.
